Davies, Harry K. Thompson Jr., Edwin D. Hoffman, Jno Baumgartner met for organization in the Pastor’s Study on Tuesday, Oct 4th 1887 – 10 PM. Present: - Rev. Reed, Conwell, Thompson, Davies, Pascoe, & Baumgartner. Bro. W.J. Reed in the Chair. Bro. Baumgartner elected Secretary. Resolved: - That the name of the institution be “The Temple College.” Resolved: - That Rev. R. H. Conwell be 

Page 4: selected as President of the Faculty of “Temple College,” Dr. E. S. Fitz, as Professor of Latin, Greek & Hebrew, & Prof. M. Komsfine, as Professor of German. On motion Voted: - That Bro. Hoffman be appointed a Committee to apply for Articles of Incorporation. Resolved: - That Pres. Conwell, be appointed a Committee to draft Rules for the government of the College. On Motion the Chairman appointed Rev. Pascoe & Haydock as the Finance Committee. On Motion: Voted: - That Bro. Thompson was elected the asurer of the Board of Trustees. Page 5: The Board of Trustees met in the Pastor’s Study, pursuant to adjournment, on Monday, Oct, 10th 1887 – 7.45 P.M. Present: - Bin. Reed, Hoffman, Thompson, Conwell, Pascoe, Haydock & Baumgartner. On motion, Resolved: - That Prof. W. H. Parker (2024 Mervine St ) be elected as Professor of Mathematics of Temple Colleges, and that he be allowed $1.00 per lesson. Bro. Hoffman, as the Committee to secure Articles of Incorporation, reported that he did not deem it expedient at present, & asked advice, & upon motion: Voted: - That the question of obtaining a Charter be laid over for the consideration of the Permanent Board. As a means of raising funds for the Support of the College, Bro. Pascoe. 

Page 6: suggested the setting apart the profiles or earnings of a specified day, and on motion, Voted: - That the Board of Trustees recommend the Pastor’s Birthday “July 15th” & that we circulate the following forms for signatures; viz: - “We, the undersigned promise toset apart our profits or wages of July 15th ( Mr. Conwell’s Birthday ) toward the support of “Temple College.” On motion the following preamble resolutions & rules for the government of the College were adopted: - Whereas: - This Board of Trustees Recognize the fact that success can only be obtained by diligent and persistent study; and that dignity of the school must be maintained by the students; therefore Resolved: - That every student entering this college must agree to complete the whole course of study for which he is entered, abide by the following

Page 7: rules and sign this extract as an agreement.Rules for the Government of Temple College. I. Students must enter the classroom promptly on time and leave it immediately at the close of the recitation.II. Students are to give close attention to the lesson during recitation, and in no case use any means to divert the attention of another from the lesson.III. Students must attend every Recitation of the term or send the Professor in charge a reasonable excuse.IV. Students will use every honorable means to maintain the reputation of the College, and so far as reasonable aid each other in the studies whenever the opportunity offers.V. Students will at all times whether in the classrooms or in the church building

Page 8: behave in an orderly and gentlemanly manner and treat all the Professors with true respect.VI.: - Students will diligently and perserveringly study the branches they enter upon for a full term in the classes which they elect when they enter, except when prevented by sickness.On motion: Voted: - That the Chairman & Secretary be appointed as the Committee on blank forms and printing. Should we confine the recitations wholely to evening hours or plan for day sessions in the future? V. Should Students from other Christian denominations be admitted at all, or, if admitted should they enter on the same terms with our own? VI. Should the School receive on equal terms all members of Baptist-Churches who wish for a higher education; but do not intend to enter the ministry? Page 14: Action of Council The Council called by Grace Baptist Church to consider questions relative to Temple College, met in the Church, Oct 31/87 2 P.M. Wayland Hoyt D.D. Moderator C.R. Blackall Clerk Prayer by Dr. Blackall. Representatives of 34 Churches present. Rev. R.H. Conwell on behalf of Grace Church presented a copy of the call & made a further statement relative to the circumstances of its organization & of the call. After much discussion & ventilating the following resolution of Rev. W. W. Dalbey amended by Dr. J.G. Walker was adopted, viz Resolved: - That we answer affirmatively the first question provided that the authorities of the school require of each applicant the endorsement of the church of which he is a member, and provided also that the studies pursued be regarded as preparatory to a higher.

Page 15: course of study preparatory before publicly entering upon the work of the Gospel Ministry: Then our motion of Rev. W. Calley the following resolution offered by Rev. Geo. E. Rees was adopted: viz Resolved: - That while we are unprepared in this early stage of the school to advise concerning the other questions presented to this Council we express our cordial sympathy with Grace Baptist Church in opening an evening school, to provide a preliminary education while pursuing their daily avocations, for young men desiring to enter upon the ministry and other Christian work. Reed was elected President, Mr. J.M. Keffer, Treasurer & J. Baumgartner Mr. Bowman submitted a proposition for a concert for the benefit of the College, which was considered & finally referred to Mr. Reed, with power to arrange after consultation with Mr. Bowman, for a concert to be held in the Church on Thursday July 2/88 Mr. Keffer & Pascoe were elected as the Finance Committee The Secretary was instructed to prepare & have printed card certificates of admission to the Class Rooms of the College. Page 20: The Board of Trustees of Temple College had a special meeting on Tuesday, March 6/88 at 10.30 P.M. in the Church. Present: - Brn. Reed, Merritt, Osbourne, Thompson, Pascoe, Hoffman & Baumgartner & Conwell Pres Reed in the Chair Pres Conwell stated that Rev J.L. Sagebeet, would accept the Chair of Rhetoric & Logic in Temple College from now until the close of the present term for $1.00 per night & expenses, whereupon - Resolved: - that Rev J.L. Sagebeer be elected to the Chair of Rhetoric & Logic in Temple College and that we pay him $50.00 for his services from now to the end of the present term. Bro. Hoffman was instructed to prepare the necessary form of application for the incorporation of the

Thompson, it was unanimously Voted: - That this College apply for a Charter of the 1st Class. On motion of Bro. Hoffman – Voted: - That the Title of this corporation be the “Temple College of Philadelphia” On motion of Bro. Hoffman: - Voted: - That the object of this Corporation shall be the support of an Educational Institution primarily for the benefit of workingmen. On motion of Bro. Hoffman, :Voted: - That

Baumgartner, Voted: - That the Solicitor be instructed to advertise the intended incorporation of “Temple College of Philadelphia” in the “Public Ledger, Philadelphia Record and Legal Intelligencer. On motion of Bro. Pascoe, Voted: - that a Committee of 3, be appointed to select a Dean for the College. The President appointed Bro. Baumgartner, Thompson & Warner. On motion of Bro. Thompson, Voted: - That a Committee of 3 be appointed to devise a form of certificate, & to obtain estimates for printing them.

The Committee on Dean reported recommending Dea J.K. Stoddart, and on motion of Bro. Thompson, Voted: - that Bro. J.K. Stoddart be elected as Dean of Temple College for 3 mos. from Apl 1st, at a compensation of $25.00 per month. Bro. Bennett was appointed as the Committee

The Board of Trustees of Temple College met on Saturday – April 14th 1888 – 9 P.M. ( at Pres. Reed’s) Present: - Brn. Reed, Bennett, Oellers, Conwell, Thompson, Keffer, Pascoe, Osbourne, Warne, Merritt, Hoffman & Baumgartner. Pres. Reed in the Chair Prayer by Bro. Conwell. Minutes read & approved.

Page 30: The Committee on Deal reported that they could have them cut from $3.00 to $5.00 according to design; and on motion, The Committee were instructed to procure one with monogram in center costing about $3.00 without press. The Committee on Certificates reported that they had ordered them from Leonhart & they would be ready next week. On motion: Bro. Bennett was appointed a Committee to procure a blank form of Receipt with line for installments on reverse, for the subscriptions to the Endowment Fund. The drafting of Art IV of Constitution to go on reverse of Certificates, relative to the privileges of subscribed to the endowment Fund, was next in order; Pres. Conwell submitted a rough draft & after a thorough discussion, it was referred to the

Page 31: Solicitor, to make a proper draft & report at the next meeting. On motion: The President – appointed Brn. Warne Davies Thompson, Baumgartner & Merritt as the Committee on Constitution & By Laws; & to report at each meeting. On motion the following was adopted: - Duties of the Dean. It shall be the duty of the Dean to be present at and during all the sessions of the College, and each afternoon of the week during the hours of from 3 to 5. He shall also keep the Accounts of the College and submit the same to the Board of Trustees, at their Regular monthly meeting. It shall be his duty to turn over all moneys belonging to the College to the Treasurer of the Board at least once a week or as often as the Board through it treasurer may be request and take his receipt for the same.

Page 32: He shall also exercise a general supervision of the Department of the College. He shall also solicit and collect subscriptions for the endowment Fund and for current expenses Adjourned to meet at Pres. Reed’s Monday – 16th inst. at 8 P.M. Adjourned. J. Baumgartner. S. Agenda: - The dean of the College shall in no case act as treasurer of the corporation and in no case deposit in bank or elsewhere any of the monies of the College in this personal account.

Page 33: Pursuant to adjournment the Board of Trustees of Temple College met at Pres. Reed’s #2010 N. 13th, on Monday Apl 16th – 1888 – 8.15 P.M. Present. Brn. Reed, Davies, Merritt, Keffer, Warne, Thompson, Henderson, Osborne, Bennett, Hoffman, Conwell, & Baumgartner Pres. Reed in the Chair. Prayer by Bro. Conwell Minutes read and approved. The Solicitor submitted Art IV of the Constitution, which was amended by the insertion of and finally adopted as read: - viz: - Section I. As soon after the formation of the corporation as practically the sum of the Fifty Thousand Dollars ($50,000.-) shall be raised by contributions of one hundred dollars ($100.00) each

Page 34: or any multiple thereof. The said sum as raised shall be used in the purchase of the lots and buildings situate on the N.E. cor. Mervine and Berks streets, in the City of Philadelphia, now occupied by the Grace Baptist Church. When the said premise shall have been purchased they shall be used for the purpose of the Corporation, under the supervision and control of the Board of Trustees, Provided however that in the even of the sale of the said premises then and in that case the proceeds of the said sale shall be divided among the contribution to the said fund of Fifty Thousand Dollars, their and each of their heirs or assigns, in the proportion of their respective contributions to the said fund, and Provide further, that the said premises shall not at any time be sold or otherwise disposed of without the consent of a majority of the members of the Corporation present at a meeting, the object of which shall be stated in a notice duly given the membership at least 30 days prior to the stated meeting together with the consent in writing of the majority in interest of the contributions to the said fund of Fifty Thousand Dollars, their heirs or assigns.

Page 35: Section 2. Nothing in the Article shall be deemed, taken or construed to prevent the payment of any sums or sums on account of the purchase money of the said premises. Section 3. This article shall not be in any wise be altered or amended without the consent of a majority in interest of the contributions to the said fund of Fifty Thousand Dollars in addition to the requirements herein – after provided for the amendment of any other Article of the Constitution.

Page 39: Prayer by Bro. Keffer. Minutes read and approved. The Stationery Committee reported that they had exchanged the books recently purchased for the Dean, for others more suitable. The Constitution Committee reported progress. On motion of Bro. Merritt, the Secretary was instructed to invite Pres. Conwell to be present as each article of the Constitution is adopted. On motion a Circular Letter “signed by Pres. Conwell & the Dean” to be used in collecting funds, after some few corrections it was adopted. On motion of Bro. Keffer: - Resolved: That a Committee be appointed to negotiate a loan of $500.00 to cover the running expenses.

Osborne moved that a Committee of 3 be appointed to meet the Board of Supervision in Church on Tuesday evening, Apl. 24th. The Chairman appointed Brn. Osborne, Merritt & Bennett. On motion of Bro. The Committee appointed to meet the Board of Supervision reported recommending that they be authorized to make sales of Stock for the benefit of the College – Recommendation adopted. On motion: Bro. R.G. Oellers was appointed the Committee of one from this Board to act with similar Committees from the Board of Supervision, and the Church for the purpose of soliciting subscriptions for the College Endowment Fund. Keffer Voted: - that the printing Committee be authorized to instruct their printer not to change any order given without the consent of the Printing Committee; also that all orders for printing must come from that Committee. Bro Warne moved that 500 Receipts be printed for subscription to the Endowment Fund. On motion: - Resolved: That the Dean of Temple College is herely instructed not to make any purchase or expend any money without a written order from the Board.
