Pennsylvania Colonization Society

Founded in 1826, the Pennsylvania Colonization Society was an anti-slavery organization, which advanced the project of returning freed blacks to West Africa.  From 1835 through 1865, the Pennsylvania Colonization Society published the monthly Colonization Herald and General Register in Philadelphia that promoted returning freed blacks to Liberia in Africa.  However, not every black Pennsylvanian supported the group.  In Philadelphia, Richard Allen and James Forten completely disavowed the Society, believing its efforts similar to the re-enslavement of freed blacks.
