Universal Negro Improvement Association "UNIA"

Current Address: 1609-11 Cecil B. Moore Boulevard

UNIA became one of the largest mass movements among people of African descent in the world. Stressing themes of black nationalism, racial pride, and the return of African-Americans to Africa to establish a "unified empire," the organization was founded by Marcus Garvey in 1911. Thousands were attracted to Garvey's ideas, and within months, 30 UNIA branches were established.
