Phila Jan. 7th '78/ Dear Carrie:/ Having a few/ spare moments I will/ now answer your letter of/ a recent date./ Pop thinks/ by the looks of your last/ paper must certainly be/ scarce so keep your [tip?]/ eye open./ The ties sent to mother & me were received/ yesterday it was of course/ a great surprise and we are/ very much pleased. R.W./ was delighted with his pin./ I suppose he will write/ his own thanks./ When pop told me he/ had written you and sent some/ money/ I thought sure some/ was for bonbons. I dont/ think old Santa means to/ slight you but you know/ he sometimes moves very slow./ "Excuse hastes" that/ "handsome present from Lola"/ was not from a gentleman./ I geuss[sic] you meant your/ roommates' roommate, could have/ eaten the whole half dozen./ There were only a hundred/ and not quiet that/ many sent. I dished them/ out very freely. But if/ I had a chance I/ could send you some this/ week. As some more are/ on the road./ Last Monday/ pop brought me very unexpect/ edly, a muff & boa./ They didnt come a day to/ soon. I thought I told you, I/ was invited to Henny's/ New Year's day was very/ gay the ladies having open/ houses. I had a number/ of Callers. [?] & Andrew/ Hill, Joe Beth, & Price came/ in a carriage. Lewis &/ Cromwell on foot. Bowers/ held a reception at night./ I was invited but did/ not go. We had a reunion/ at the church the same/ evening. Mother is going/ to have some of her friends/ to tea Thurs. evening Mrs./ Hannah Miller & daughter/ as [Lottie?] Rassett is boarding/ there thought she would ask/ her too, but I objected when/ she named Bucket as he/ never calls: with some/ more of her friends./ She is going to leave a/ tart supper I tell you./ Chicken salad fried & stewed/ oysters, jelly &c.&c.&c.&c.&c./ Cousin Belinda has/ been appointed matron out/ to the home. We are looking/ for her down every day./ I keep forgetting to tell/ you I have a motto there/ for you and as soon as/ it is finished I shall/ hang it in the Library./ We have turned it into a/ sitting room as the down/ stair room is so cold./ Miss L. Jackson has been/ quite sick./ Ada Bowers/ and Mother called this/ morning they were invited for/

I have just received/ Rob's letter so/ how was it you/ was not invited/ to the reception/ I should ask/ what presents/ Mr & Mrs Still/ sent but shall/ imagine them/ to be among the/ handsomest./ I got a letter/ this morning from/ [Emmie?] she tells/ me she is Aunty/ "[?]". I do/ wish you could/ or would send/ some papers/ you forgot to/ enclose/ that slip. It is/ just a lovely/ day but I/ must stop as/ I have but a/ little time/ Sunday P.M./ I thought I would add a/ word more in honor of Willie's/ birthday. You must give him/ three sound kisses for me./ [?] class/ had its first "class society meeting"/ Friday evening. When I went to/ prayers I thought whilst I/ was down I had better remain/ so stayed at the hall but did/ not go out to tea allthough[sic] the/ girls wanted me too[sic], I was sorry/ afterwards I did not, as I didn't/ get home until near 8 o clock/ but I got what was to be had/ namely some cold tea bread and/ butter and some apple "[?]"/ I must tell you/ a joke about Benchly and the/ to get/ ready/ for/ Rhetorical/ what was/ the name/ of that/ fine looking/ gentleman/ do tell/ he had better/ be careful/ how he smiles/ my things are/ nearly all moved/ No[xxx?] the other/ Yours/ JS younger one of the [Moles?] just the/ other week C[xxxxx?] lectured here/ Langston you know goes (or at least/ used to) with Benchly so of course/ he was to have gone with her/ and another one of the young men/ was going with Moles, [Child?] they/ were just more than going to fix/ up bought white kids ribbons/ and flowers and the fellows never/ went near them, they were just/ more than angry and intended/ to keep^it a "secret" just among the/ hall girls but it was to[sic] good/ to be kept in. So I believe now/ they are out with them./ Miss L. Moles (the older)/ is taking first term of grammar/ and "rithmetic". One of the little boys/ was up in my room the other day and/ asked me who blacked my face/ I said [for?] I didn't know it was/ let me see. You didn't say anything/ about my things./ To say that I deeply regret the/ failure of my negotiations/ with you, would be a feeble/ representation of my actual/ feelings. The joy I had anticipated/ in your society and the [gain?] to my/ school, are effectually thrown to the/ winds. But in the wise decision of your/ parents you and I must willingly/ acquiesce. Their plans and prospects/ for you are undoubtedly the/ best as you cannot as^ well discriminate/ and judge for yourself as they for you./ I have no misgivings as to your/ usefulness[sic] wherever and in what/ ever you may be engaged. Since/ writing you last, I have been, most/ of the time, unwell. Yesterday, I had/ just left my bed after an indisposi/ tion of several days. [Calomel?], quin-/ odine, chlorade of potash, and the/ like have had full play with my/ system. My head and strength are,/ as yet, anything but enviably stout./ Owing to my inability to apply myself at/ present, to my law studies I have been/employing my leisure in studying span/ ish and reading Voltaire's Siècle de Louis/ XV. The Spanish, in pronunciation, is a/ remarkably easy language but the many/ idioms peculiar to it in common/ with other Romance languages/ is the trying part in acquiring it/ I shall attempt to acquire it enough/ for [general?] [reading?]. But of Voltaire,/ what shall I say? His style, so racy,/ so piquant, so witty and [?] so/ instruct[xxxx?] interesting! His descript/ tion of the enterprise, victories, defeat,/ and deplorable misfortunes of/ the Pretender, is graphically beau/ tiful./ I wish I could fill out the remain/ der of this sheet, but my force of [mind?]/ is failing, I must reluctantly aban/ don the [?]. I hope you will/ not measure the length of your/ reply by this. Write much, the more/ the better, as [?] [?] [that?] I am/ [very?] happy peruse your letters/ with an interest begotten by those/ of no other. I had some nosegays/ gathered to enclose in this but they/ have lost their savor; in my next/ letter I shall [?] your olfactory/ senses with [?]/ It is near eleven P.M. For the present,/ good night./ Ever yours, Thos. De S. Lucky

Folder 100 O. Sept. 9th", '74./ Dear Mother,/ I would have/ written to you Monday/ but Willie has been so poor=/ ly most of my time has/ been given to him for the/ last two days; for three days/ and nights he has had hot fever/ and been quite restless, the physi/ cian thinks a little derangement/ about the liver. He looks real/ badly but I hope he will soon/ get over it. I am now/ waiting for N[?]ie Peck/ to return with the buggy so/ that I can take him again/ to see the Dr. Mrs Peck thinks/ it is the effects of the journey;/ irregular, diet rather much?/ [?] &c., which have caused/ indigestion. Lincoln University/ Ap 16th 68/ Dear cousin:-/ Yours of March the 8th/ was received some days ago./ At the time of its arrival at the/ University, I was spending/ a pleasant visit at home./ I found all of my people/ very well; but sister Emma/ I had a long conversation,/ with Uncle James, and in the/ course of our ple^asant converse,/ he informed me, that his/ son William would not/ remain at college longer than/ June. All of my old friends/ were glad to see me, and/ of course, I was pleased to see/ them On the whole I had a/ good time./ Your eyes; but still you may/ not agree with me. But never-/ the less we wait the glorious/ day of liberty. I mean liberty/ in its truest, and strictest sense./ With much anxiety do I watch/ the signs of the times. - There is/ an enternal[sic] reformation, work-/ing in the heart of this nation,/ which I trust, will restore freedom/ to all. I know, that there are/ all manner of workmen trying/ to prevent the coming of that/ auspicious,^ day Which^ we long to see/ But the Crisis of a tenable con-/flict is at hand, when the/ iron arm of the [bold?] tyrant/ is to be broken, or the ship of this/ Republic must sink/ May that ^day be hastened, when/ the [xxx?] shall be permitted/ to shine, upon a land of/ freedom, consecrated to/ God, in the name of a true/ Republic; having this inscrip-/tion indelibly written upon her/ banner, freedom justice, and/ humanity. And then shall this/ indeed be a land of the free/ and brave, and a hone for/ the oppressed. Lest I weary with/ a dry and unimportant subject/ I will change the conversation/ We are preparing for commence/ment day, at which time/ we hop[sic] to make a grand display/ I must close, hoping the next/ time you write, I will be favoured/ with your photograph./ Tell me what your friend/ thinks of Lincoln University/ I will send you this years/ Catalogue soon Will you be so/ kind as to send me one of/ yours Friend Waters & [Harmon?]/ are well. If you [should?] by chance/ see an old maid, who would ^ like to/ keep house for ^a young bachelor/ please let me know, as I shall/ want a good house keeper as/ soon as I am [done?] here. She/ must be pleasant true and kind/ When your friend one answering/ the description. And I am not sure/ but our Heavenly Father means to/ take him under his own immediate/ supervision ere long. Of course we/ love to have our children stay with/ us in this unfriendly and [wretched?]/ world, although I have long since/ been persuaded that He who created/ us knows far better than we. What/ is best for us, and when he takes/ what belongs to him who dares to dispute/ his claim? So, whether we live or/ die if we are his all is well./ Enclosed you will find Ten/ dollars; in accordance with the demand/ contained in Ella's letter./

Aug. 20th 1873/ Dear Edward:/ Your letter dated 18th inst/ but Post Marked yesterday, came to hand/ this morning 20 minutes before 10 just/ as I was compelled to leave for court,/ hence no time was afforded for getting off/ your order untill[sic] after the court had/ adjourned. As quickly as possible/ after adjournment, I went to my house/ for the purpose of hurrying off the box. Having/ only 3 copies all [told?] of the [eng. clo.?] I decided/ very quickly to make up the box without/ the compliment ("14 cops") you wrote for as you/ will see by your bill. Within the last few/ days I have been sending out books pretty lively/ and although I notified my [binders?] 2 days/ back, still as yet they have not filled/ my order. Today however, they promise/ that I should have some on Friday./ You with[sic] find a copy for my friend/ Rev. Mr. W Morris, which please present/ with my regards. Having none of the [Sheep?]/ with Steele engraving, I have concluded to/ send him a paneled style. If you chose/ to give two copies to two of the most influential/ papers in Newark, do so and charge them to me./

Phila. Feb. 5th /69./ Mr Wiley/ After so long a time the/ anxiously looked for arrived. True/ to my expectations yet contrary/ to custom, and the small amount/ of feeling allowed (by public opin=/ ion, to be exercised towards one in/ my state of mind by one in your/ frame of my mind) your letter/ was all that it could have been/ more indeed than was merited/ In it you have yielded to no weak/ =ness but acted as one once sin=/ cere, and not afraid nor [ashamed?]/ to acknowledge^ it though you have/ suffered acutely it [may?]. In this/ letter I see breathed forth the spirit/ and feelings of an aggrieved but/ ready to forgive man. Not on=/ ly forgive but bury in the re=/ turned love of the aggressor all/ sting of past injury if it be/ possible so to do. You know/ how I used to talk of the chil=/ dish manner in which as it seemed/ to me George Smith, and R. Winches/ ter courted (?). I feel even now that/ it was mere whimsical child's play/ with thieve. But our difference has/ been of a far more serious character. In the/ first place I give you more credit/ for true Christianly manhood/ than I gave George Smith_ he/ was foppish and if one should/ profess now love for him, and/ now not it was not to be thought/ strange of though he seemed to think/ hard of it for a little while! You/ on the other hand are not of that/ Hamp, and consequently none per=/ haps but the most heartless of the/ heartless would think of winning/ your affection and widely breaking/ it off. [x?] was indeed the least of my/ thoughts to cause even the heart pangs/ that I have caused but with a feel/ ing of discontent in my heart that/ there was not on my past that re-/ turn of affection which there should/ be, urged on by the feeling that I/ was acting more honorably than/ not to tell you so I took the stand/ that I did. I can now see well/ where in the trouble lay And that/ you can ask, much less receive/ me again into confidence I can con-/ ceive only as I believe you always/ sincere; weighing well the future so/ far as you could see it which/ I, alas! failed to do. Whilst I admired/ the soul that was within you I re=/ =garded too much the outer polish/ gloried too highly in intellectual/ and bodily show deluding my=/ self many a time that I gave/ ample scope to the value of/ good common sense. But how/ many many times have I felt/ the need of a friend just like/ yourself here with me. I think/ I know now what it is to re=/ turn affection such as you once/ bestowed. Pride is one of my great/ est faults I almost vowed some/ months back that I never would, [?] could think of making/ any advances to you. But you/ see it needed only the touching of/ the spring which perhaps un=/ consciously^ you did ^ touch by writing to me/ I hastily responded, and [ere?] a second/ letter came there was an outburst/ of my feelings an entire confession/ I will not conceal it you have/
