Mr Barnes Lincoln University [May?] 13th 6[8?] Miss Carrie, Many pardons/ I beg for my seeming negligence/ in failing with to to write/ according to promises I/ have had very poor health/ during the whole of this ses/ sion untill[sic] quite recently/ This has been the only thing/ that has prevented me from/ writing. / Our session is now/ rapidly drawing to a close/ You cannot regret more than I/ that the privilege of a correspondence has/ been so long withheld lost. A [rich?] harvest I take it would/ have been my reward from the [few?] of/ one so gifted as yourself.
