Shoes Installation by Ok-Hee Jeoung

About three months after the Sewol ferry tragedy Ok-Hee Jeong visited the classrooms of the victims in Danwon High School. The ten classrooms of the second High School year were empty. Dry, white chrysanthemums lay on each victim’s desk. Time stood still and the dusty calendar still displayed the month of April.
A pair of sneakers lay under a desk - pretty sneakers in white and pink colors. It seems that one schoolgirl forgot them there before the deadly class trip. How heartbreaking, what a cruel sight.

Ok-Hee Jeong’s shoe installation is in memory of all the victims of the ferry tragedy. But it is also a promise for them and their families not to forget their cruel deaths.

294 Pairs of shoes: The number of shoes in the installation represents the number of victims found until now. They were collected by Koreans in Berlin with a lot of effort. The shoes have been placed in ten rows, symbolizing the ten classes of the victims.
In Western and Eastern cultures the number ten is also the symbol for achievement and completeness, the beginning of a new dimension. The number ten in this installation is the hope and the desire that the tragic deaths of all the victims shall not remain meaningless. It is the hope that the South Korean society can change into a better society through the Special Law which the families of the victims are demanding.
