New York New Jersey Sesamo (People in solidarity with families of the Sewol Victims) held the 1st annual memorial ceremony of the Sewol Ferry Tragedy on 20 April. About a year ago, on 16 April 2014, the world helplessly watched 304 people drown, including 245 high school students on a school trip. It has already been a year, however, there has not yet been a comprehensive investigation on why the passengers were not promptly rescued and why the sunken ship has still not been salvaged. So we marched to turn out our deep sorrow and anger into actions to ensure tragedies like this will never happen again.
With a yellow ballon symbolizing hope for the bright future and portraits of the victims in our hands, we marched over the Brooklyn Bridge to support the Sewol victims' families. While marching, we called all the names of the 304 victims together and shared this story with complete strangers who, upon hearing the story, even showed their warm sympathy for the victims and their families of the Sewol tragedy unlike the president of South Korea (Park Geun-hye) who has never showed a sympathy. Instead, President Park actually has been hiring police to use tear gas and pepper spray at faces of the victims families to block their march to the blue house.
We marched from Cadman Plaza Park (BK) to Thomas Paine Park (NY) where we held a few more events including making a paper boat, performing a music concert, and so on. We made a yellow-paper boat and wrote words of encouragement and support on it for the victims families. We will send them to South Korea so that the Sewol families feel what we feel now. And we also called the names of 9 missing people all together. At the end of the event, we let all the yellow balloons fly into the sky, crying out "We Love You. We will Never Forget You."
Some say, "It is time to move on. Let go of the past." We are not staying or living in the past. We are actually moving on. We know our children can not come back to life again. What we are doing now is trying hard to learn from the past so that we can stop tragedies like the Sewol disaster from happening again to our children.

뉴욕 뉴저지 세사모 (세월호를 잊지 않는 사람들의 모임) 4월 20일 세월호 희생자를 위한 1주기 추모 집회를 뉴욕에서 개최하였습니다. 세월호 참사 (4.16.2014)후 지난 1년간 아무것도 밝혀진 것이 없습니다. 저희들은 함께 슬퍼하고 분노하며 노란 희망의 풍선과 하늘의 별이된 아이들의 영정사진을 들고 Brooklyn 다리를 걸었습니다.
오후 4시 세월호를 잊지 않는 약 200명의 사람들이 Cadman Plaza 공원에 모여 304명의 희생자들에 대한 묵념으로 행사가 시작되었습니다. 개회인사와 행진 준비를 마친 4:30분쯤 사람들은 "Recover the Sewol Ferry Reveal The Truth" (세월호를 인양하라, 진실을 인양하라) 라는 쓰여진 몸자보를 입고, 노란 희망풍선과 아이들의 영정사진을 들고 아이들을 향한 소중한 한 걸음 한걸음을 옮겨 뉴욕의 상징 Brooklyn 다리위로 행진을 시작하였습니다. 노란 풍선과 영정사진을 품에 앉고 행진하는 모습을 혹이심 가득 어린 눈으로 바라보던 세계 각지에서 온 외국인들도 준비한 전단지를 통해 사실을 알게되고 아픔을 함께 누눌 수 있는 뜻깊은 시간이 되었습니다. 행진하는 동안 304명의 희생자의 이름을 한명 한명 불렀습니다. 그리고 지나가는 외국인들에게 "The Korean Ferry called Sewol sank with 304 innocent people inside a year ago in South Korea. We are calling the names of the victims mostly high school students. We still don't know why they died althouh they could have been all rescued." (세월호 참사로 억울하게 죽은 304명의 아이들의 이름을 부르고 있습니다. 아직도 살수 있었던 아이들이 죽었는지 모릅니다.) 라고 말해 주었습니다. 그렇게 304명의 이름을 부르며 한걸음 한걸음 발걸음을 옮겨 Brooklyn 다리를 무사히 건넜습니다. 심지어 미국 경찰 10명 저희들의 경호해 주어서 아무런 문제없이 평화로운 행진을 하였습니다.
그렇게 맨하탄에 도착한 세월호를 잊지 않는 사람들은 Thomas Pain 공원에서 2부 행사를 가졌습니다. 노란 종이배를 접 그 위에 세월호 유가족과 실종자 가족분들에게 메세지를 적어 보내는 시간도 가졌습니다. 자유로운 발언을 통해 우리의 아픔을 나누고 공연을 통해 아픔을 달래는 시간도 가졌습니다. 아직도 돌아오지 못한 우리 9명의 실종자들의 이름을 한분 한분 함께 부르는 시간도 가졌습니다. 마지막으로 성명서를 낭독하고 저희들은 가지고 있던 노란 희망 풍선을 하늘로 날려보내며 "애들아 사랑한다" 라고 모두 크게 외쳤습니다.
사랑하고 존경하는 세월호 유가족 실종자 가족 여러분 뉴욕 뉴저지에 거주하는 세월호를 잊지 않는 사람들은 세월호의 온전한 인양과 진실규명이 되는 그날까지 세월호를 절대 잊지 않고 함께 하겠습니다. 유가족 여러분 실종자 가족 여러분 진심으로 사랑합니다. 그리고 힘내십시요.
