In 1914, Lord Kitchener, British Secretary of State for War, initiated a campaign to recruit a large volunteer army.
By the end of 1915, 2,466,719 men had voluntarily enlisted in the British Army.
The hats and styles of dress depicted in this poster are representative of the different levels of British society. The image suggests that men from all classes are expected to do their duty and enlist.
