64,784 Canadians were killed in WWI, another 19,054 are officially listed as missing.
Most roads on the Western Front were not paved and were in very poor condition. In addition, the armies were under-mechanized and horses, rather than vehicles, were greatly depended upon for supplies and soldier transport.
